Chesapeake Bay Retriever – Ownership and care of the breed
Breed Introduction
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever, also known as the Chessie, is one of the few American breeds of dog that combines a bright and happy disposition with bravery, intelligence and a strong work ethic. They are an incredibly loyal and affectionate dog to their family. This makes them protective by nature, meaning they will not hesitate to stand up to any challenge in a situation where they feel that their family is threatened. This, along with their alert nature, makes them excellent watchdogs. However, despite this they are quite friendly with strangers and do not tend to bite.. They do well with children if introduced from an early age, but somethimes have a tendency to play a bit roughly at times. They also enjoy the companionship of other dogs and people. Chessies have an independent mind and like to have their own way, therefore are not the best dog for the novice owners. Due to their high energy and assertiveness, they need an active and experienced owner who can provide the right leadership. This dog should be trained and socialized as early as possible since they can be quite dominant.
