Havanese – A devoted companion dog
How to successfully own and look after a Havanese
								Breed Introduction
Very much coveted by Cuban royalty, the Havanese is a lively and outgoing dog who has proven himself to be a truly devoted companion. Because they are very much people-oriented, this breed can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time. Havanese dogs have bundles of energy, but with the right training they can be successfully used as therapy and assistance dogs. However, it does take time and patience to successfully train this breed. Havaneses are usually calm, but will bark to alert their owners to the approach of strangers. A sociable dog, the Havanese gets along well with children and other house pets.

Will a Havanese be a suitable dog for my family?
- Yes, if you want a tiny sized dog (under 15lbs)
 - If you have a small back yard or no back yard at all
 - Whether or not your back yard (if you have one) is fenced or not
 - If you are able to spend at least 45-60 minutes total per day for the feeding, exercising, training, and grooming of your dog
 - You want a long or double coated dog
 - The Havanese is a good choice if you want (or need) a dog that doesn't shed its coat. However, he may need to be clipped or groomed. It's believed that such a dog might give fewer problems to those who suffer from allergy issues to pet hair
 - There are infants or young children in the home
 - As long as you have plenty of time and the persistence to successfully housebreak your dog
 - You want a dog that's reasonably active as a puppy, but that will become more settled as he matures into adulthood. The Havanese is a good choice if he might have to be left home alone during the day
 - You're looking for a dog that is generally easy to train (takes an average amount of time)
 - If you want a dog that will bark to warn you of odd noises or strangers
 - The Havanese is a good choice for the first time dog owner
